Althrocin belongs to a class of medications known as macrolide antibiotics. It contains Erythromycin as its active component and is prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections, as well as to prevent bacterial endocarditis and episodes of rheumatic fever.

Use Althrocin exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Erythromycin can be taken either on an empty stomach or alongside food or milk. Avoid crushing, chewing, breaking, or opening enteric-coated or delayed-release tablets. Swallow the tablet whole.

Antibiotics like the Althrocin may lead to diarrhea, which can indicate a new infection. If you experience diarrhea that is watery or bloody, contact your doctor. Do not take any medication to stop the diarrhea unless instructed by your doctor.

Avoid using Althrocin if you are allergic to erythromycin or if you are currently taking Cisapride or Pimozide. If you have liver disease or myasthenia gravis, your doctor may require a dose adjustment or special tests to take erythromycin safely. Althrocin is generally considered safe for an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant during your treatment. Erythromycin can transfer into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Do not use this medication without consulting your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction to erythromycin, such as hives; difficulty breathing; or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Contact your doctor immediately if you encounter serious side effects such as: chest pain, irregular heartbeats, light-headedness or fainting; nausea, abdominal pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, pale stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or diarrhea that is watery or contains blood. Less severe side effects of erythromycin can include: mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach discomfort; dizziness, headache, fatigue; vaginal itching or discharge; or mild itching or skin rash.

Several medications can interact with Althrocin. Inform your doctor of all prescription and over-the-counter drugs you are taking, including vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements, and prescriptions from other healthcare providers. Avoid starting any new medication without your doctor's knowledge.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your usual schedule. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.

If you suspect an overdose of Althrocin, seek emergency medical help. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or hearing impairment.
